Let me start the list of with a banging Street photography spot. Yup that’s right! The busy streets of Pondy Bazar!
PONDY BAZAAR
Although it is a busy street with numerous crowds and plenty of stores, it is has a period of calmness and serenity for a short period in the night.
If you can reach the place at night, by 12 am – 4 am to be precise, you can experience the symmetrical streets with very little people to disturb you.
Be it the colorful lights💡 or the empty roads this makes a wonderful spot for night photography in Chennai. Just look at the picture I took for example, It was around 1 am when I reached the place and there was no one around.
So with those symmetrical lights and the empty road I had to click a picture for Instagram.
NAPIER BRIDGE
If you are into light photography and need a cool place to highlight your subjects this is the perfect spot for you. Built over the COOVUM River, connecting Fort St. George with the Marina beach, this bridge is the go-to spot for pictures during night rides.
If you are someone like me who loves to take amazing photos of automobilesðŸï¸ this can be the perfect spot for that. For example, the day I took this picture it was quite crowded and many were filming with their bikes here to get the perfect picture for Instagram.
You should be a bit careful and responsible here as this is a main road and the police would be quick to ask you to leave the place, and the constant crowds don’t help the case😅
TIDEL-PARK ROAD
This is an interesting place to take photos since it is mostly used by the 9-5 IT workers and is relatively empty throughout the night. The overhead bridges in this road are perfect for portrait and long exposure photography.
Just look this photo I took, It was round 9 at night when I cam here, and the empty bridge was just perfect for a shot like this, If you want to take pictures of the road on the train track to side this place is great for that as well. Just take a look at these Pictures.
THIRUVANMIYUR BEACH
Imagine a non-crowded beach in Chennai, that’s what the Thiruvanmiyur beach is. If you want to get a clear picture of the night sky or play with some light photography this is a great spot for it.
Remember to be responsible and careful as most beaches are closed for public access at night being a residential beach for most would mean there is limited access to the beach.
SHELL GAS STATIONS
Yes, you might think this is a place I fill petrol in… you are right to think so but Gas Stations also act as great places for night photography thanks to their lighting.
If you are someone like me who loves the aesthetics of a grainy film camera gas stations can me a great place for those 35mm film photos. Just take a look at this picture below I took at Shell with my friend.
PULICAT LAKE
Now I did say I was gonna let you in on a secret spot for astrophotography right?
Here it is! Pulicat lake, jus a hour drive from central Chennai would take you to this beautiful place with very little light pollution. You can just set up your gear here camp the night out with some locals enjoying a fish fry and head home with stunning pictures of the night sky.
VELACHERY BRIDGE
Although most bridges in Chennai are good spots for night photography the bridge connecting Vijayanagar and the 100 ft road in Velachery is perfect for night photography thanks to its high altitude and symmetrical lighting.
If you can make it here by around 1:00 am – 2:00 am like I did you can almost have the entire bridge to yourself. You can try out cool different shots, and let your creativity flow in a spot like this.
